To receive a cosmetology license in Alaska or a license in one of the other beauty practitioner disciplines in this state you have to attend a licensed school and complete the minimum required training hours before you can take the state’s board exams. These required training hours are specified by the Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers. After you pass the exam you can apply for the license. The fee for the license application is $150, the license itself comes $180 for. The examination fee is $120.00 ($60.00 for written, $60.00 for practical exam).

Minimum required training hours

  • Baber license: 1650 hours
  • Esthetician license: 350 hours
  • Nail Technician license: 12 hours

Comment: In the state of Alaska there is currently no separate cosmetology license available.

Examinations are already stressful, but a lack of information or misinformation only adds unnecessary stress. The exams are administered by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC). Therefore, we advise every applicant to carefully read the examination information on www.nictesting.org and contact the Board or NIC  if you have further questions.

Cosmetology License Renewal

Cosmetology licenses in Alaska are renewed every odd year in August. The renewal fees are $168 for all beauty practitioner disciplines. Alaska does not require continuing education (CE) hours for individual license renewals.

Out-of-state license / Out-of-country license

An out-of-state license does not automatically qualify you for a cosmetology license in Alaska.

Out of state

You must submit an application by “waiver of examination” and meet the qualifications.

Licensure by waiver of examination:

You are eligible for an Alaska license by waiver of examination if you have a current and active license in another state, with the requirements of the other state being equal to or greater than the requirements of the State of Alaska. If you meet the required training hours (see above) then you are not required to take any exams in Alaska.

If you do not have at least 1650 hours of training in a school or 2000 hours as an apprentice, you can meet the hour requirement for Barbering, Hairdressing, or Esthetics by submitting proof of full-time work experience. If you have at least 1500 and no more than 1649 hours you must verify 1 year of full-time work experience. If you have 1000 to 1499 hours of training you must verify a minimum of 2 years of full-time work experience. Full-time work experience is considered a minimum of 32 hours per week.  If you cannot verify work experience, you must make up the hours in a school or apprenticeship program. If you did not take a written and practical test in your state of licensure, you must take the tests in Alaska.

License verifications must be mailed directly to the Board’s office from the issuing authority/state board. The license verification must verify the number of hours of training and proof of passing a written and practical exam.

Transcripts must be mailed directly to the Board’s  office from the school.

Out of Country

Out of country license holders are not eligible for licensure by waiver of examination. You must qualify and pass the written and practical exams. Transcripts, certificates, etc., must be submitted to a credential evaluation agency for conversion to US equivalency. The board must approve all out of country training.
