These required training hours are specified by the Montana Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. After you pass the exam you can apply for the license. The fee for the license application is $80.

Cosmetology License Renewal

Cosmetology licenses in Montana are renewed every two years on March 1st. The renewal fees are $80 for all beauty practitioner disciplines. Montana does currently not require continuing education (CE) hours are for individual license renewals.

Out-of-state license / Out-of-country license

An out-of-state license does not automatically qualify you for a cosmetology license in Montana. But you qualify for licensure through endorsement.

You must hold a current active license in another state and must request verification of license history from each state in which you hold or have held a license. You must be at least 18 years or older and provide proof, such as a birth certificate or driver’s license.  Once the board receives all documents and fees, it will process your application. If you have taken both written and practical parts of the board approved national exam and had a pass rate of 75% on each, a license may be issued immediately. If you took state exams, or the pass rate for the state in which you took the national exam is below 75%, you are required to pass a National exam prior to licensing and will then be mailed an admissions letter for the exam.
