To receive a cosmetology license in Vermont or a license in one of the other beauty practitioner disciplines in this state you have to attend a licensed school and complete the minimum required training hours before you can take the state’s board exams. These required training hours are specified by the Vermont Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. After you pass the exam you can apply for the license. The fee for the license application is $110. The examination currently costs $90.

  • Cosmetologist license: 1500 hours
  • Baber license: 1500 hours
  • Esthetician license: 600 hours
  • Manicurist license: 400 hours

Examinations are already stressful, but a lack of information or misinformation only adds unnecessary stress. The exams are administered by Professional Credential Services Inc. (PCS). Cosmetology License Renewal

Cosmetology licenses in Vermont are renewed every two years in odd-numbered years on November 30. The renewal fees are $130 for all beauty practitioner disciplines. Vermont does not require continuing education (CE) hours are for individual license renewals. Instructors, however, have to complete 24 CE hours within each renewal period.

Out of state

An out-of-state license does not automatically qualify you for a cosmetology license in Vermont. But you qualify for licensure through endorsement.

To apply for a license by endorsement applicants must submit the following:

  1. Complete Application (download from the board’s homepage)
  2. $110.00, payable to Vermont Secretary of State. Application fees are non-refundable.
  3. Completed Verification of Licensure Standing, Applicant complete stop portion of the form and forwards it to every state in which he or she has been or is currently licensed.
  4. Submit a copy of high school diploma or general educational development (GED) diploma.
  5. Evidence of your professional training as a Barber, Cosmetologist, Manicurist (Nail Technician), or Esthetician directly from the institution in which you received your professional education. This verification must include the actual number of hours of training you completed. See required hours above.
  6. Once your application is complete you will be given information to register with PCS (Professional Credential Service) to take your Jurisprudence examination. The exam fee is $90.00
