To receive a cosmetology license in Colorado or a license in one of the other beauty practitioner disciplines in this state you have to attend a licensed school and complete the minimum required training hours before you can take the state’s board exams. These required training hours are specified by the Colorado Office of Barber & Cosmetology Licensure. After you pass the exam you can apply for the license. In total, the fee for the license is $165 which result from $30 application fee, $75 fee for practical exam and $60 fee for written exam

 

Minimum required training hours

  • Cosmetologist license: 60 credit hours, approximately 1,800 hours total
  • Esthetician license: 20 credit hours, approximately 600 hours
  • Manicurist license: 20 credit hours, approximately 600 hours
  • Hairstylist license: 40 credit hours, approximately 1,200 hours

Examinations are already stressful but a lack of information or misinformation only adds unnecessary stress. The exams in Colorado are administered through Pearson Vue. Cosmetology License Renewal

Cosmetology licenses in Colorado are renewed every two years.  At the moment continuing education (CE) hours are not required for individual licenses.  The renewal fees are $32 for all individual licenses of all above-mentioned beauty practitioner disciplines.

 

Out-of-state license / Out-of-country license

If you can demonstrate that your education is equivalent to the requirements of Colorado, your education requirements will be waived.  You will then have to pass the written and practical exams to obtain your license for Colorado.  Every 30 hours of education translates to 1 credit hour.
