To receive a cosmetology license in Kansas or a license in one of the other beauty practitioner disciplines in this state you have to attend a licensed school and complete the minimum required training hours before you can take the state’s board exams. These required training hours are specified by the Kansas Board of Cosmetology. After you pass the exam you can apply for the license. The fee for the written test is $50, for the practical exam $65, and the fee for the license is $60.

Minimum required training hours

  • Cosmetologist license: 1500 hours
  • Electrologist: 500 hours
  • Esthetician license: 1000 hours
  • Manicurist (Nail Technology) license: 350 hours

Examinations are already stressful, but a lack of information or misinformation only adds unnecessary stress. The exams are administered by the Board. Therefore, we advise every applicant to read through the information compiled at www.cosmetologykansas.com (Exam FAQ) and contact the Board if you have further questions.

Cosmetology License Renewal

Cosmetology licenses in Kansas are renewed every two years.  At the moment no continuing education (CE) is required for individual license renewal. The renewal fee is $45 for all beauty practitioner types.

Out-of-state license / Out-of-country license

An out-of-state license or out of country license does not automatically qualify you for a cosmetology license in Kansas. Kansas does not have reciprocity with other states. Thus, you need to complete an out of state application (Forms) and meet the Board’s requirements for licensure (see above). The application fee is $50.
