To receive a cosmetology license in Kentucky or a license in one of the other beauty practitioner disciplines in this state you have to attend a licensed school and complete the minimum required training hours before you can take the state’s board exams. These required training hours are specified by the Kentucky Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists. After you pass the exam you can apply for the license. The total fee for the license is $100, which is broken down into $75 for the exam and $25 for the individual license.

Minimum required training hours

  • Cosmetologist license: 1500 hours / 6 months for apprentice
  • Esthetician license: 1000 hours
  • Nail Technician license: 600 hours

Examinations are already stressful but a lack of information or misinformation only adds unnecessary stress. The exams in Kentucky are administered by the board. Therefore, we advise every applicant to read through the Examination Instructions (find them here)  and contact the Board if you have further questions.

Out-of-state license / Out-of-country license

Licensed in another state

If you have been licensed for more than two years in another state, then regardless of the number of hours completed, you are eligible for examination, written and practical. You must have certification of licensure from the state board or Professional licensing agency where your license was issued.

If you have been licensed less than two years in another state then you must provide a certification of hours and/or license from the other state board and complete remaining hours required for that license in a school of cosmetology in Kentucky. Kentucky only accepts a number of hours the state of your license requires for licensing. An individual must complete an out of state enrollment application and provide appropriate proof of education. Application for enrollment must be obtained from the prospective school. The out of state exam application can be found here.

The fees for the out of state exams are $120 for Cosmetologists and $125 for Estheticians.
