To receive a cosmetology license in Nebraska or a license in one of the other beauty practitioner disciplines in this state you have to attend a licensed school and complete the minimum required training hours before you can take the state’s board exams. These required training hours are specified by the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services. After you pass the exam you can apply for the license. The fee for the license application is $95.

Minimum required training hours

  • Cosmetologist license: 2100 hours
  • Electrologist: 600 hours
  • Esthetician license: 600 hours
  • Nail Technician: 300 hours

Examinations are already stressful, but a lack of information or misinformation only adds unnecessary stress. The exams are administered by PSI. Therefore, we advise every applicant to read through the examination information or at candidate.psiexams.com  and contact the Board or LaserGrade if you have further questions.

Cosmetology License Renewal

Cosmetology licenses in Nebraska are renewed every two years in odd years for Cosmetology, Electrologists, and Nail Technicians and even years for Estheticians.  The renewal date is the last day of the year. Eight (8) continuing education (CE) hours are required within each renewal period for individual license renewal. The renewal fees vary for the beauty practitioner disciplines.

Out-of-state license / Out-of-country license

An out-of-state license or out of country license does not automatically qualify you for a cosmetology license in Nebraska. With an Esthetician license, you may qualify for licensure through reciprocity. In all other cases, you need to take the exam if you can provide proof of the meeting the required training hours from your home state or home country. The application is $95 or less if late in the renewal period.
