To receive a cosmetology license in North Carolina or a license in one of the other beauty practitioner disciplines in this state, you have to attend a licensed school and complete the minimum required training hours. The minimum hours and duration of apprenticeship are specified by the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners. The Fee for the initial Cosmetology license is $49.

 

Minimum Required Training Hours

  • Cosmetologist license: 1500 hours /1200 hours apprenticeship
  • Esthetician license: 600 hours
  • Manicurist license: 300 hours
  • Natural Hair Care Specialist license: 300 hours

Examinations are already stressful, but a lack of information or misinformation only adds unnecessary stress. Therefore, we advise every applicant to talk to their beauty school teachers to clear all questions. The board also offers important information about the examination.

Cosmetology License Renewal

Cosmetology licenses in North Carolina are renewed every three years.  The fee for renewal of an individual cosmetology license is $39.  Apprentice, esthetician, natural hair care specialist and manicurist licenses are due for renewal every year. the fees are $10.  North Carolina require 24 hours of continued education (CE) for renewal of cosmetology licenses. These can be taken during any time within the renewal period.

Out-of-state License

Out-of-state licenses can be transferred to a cosmetology license in North Carolina when

  1. the cosmetologist license is current and in good standing in the other state
  2. the state the licensee is licensed in offers reciprocity to North Carolina

If you meet these requirements you first need to obtain an original (unopened) Certification from the licensing agency that you are currently licensed at and have it mailed to North Carolina Bd. of Cosmetic Arts 1207 Front Street · Suite 110 Raleigh, NC 27609 Alternatively, if your licensing agency sends electronic certifications, then the agency can email the certification to: certifications@nccosmeticarts.com After checking the status on the bottom of this page NC licensing in another state you can file the application. A link can be found on the same page.   Note: Reciprocity licenses will not be granted for hair braiders, manicurist or estheticians in the state of Florida. Reciprocity licenses will not be granted for hair braiders in the state of Texas.   Current reciprocity fees are $64 for Cosmetologist license and $35 for Apprentice, Esthetician, Manicurist and Natural Hair Care. Overpayments will be returned.
