To receive a cosmetology license in Utah or a license in one of the other beauty practitioner disciplines in this state you have to attend a licensed school and complete the minimum required training hours before you can take the state’s board exams. These required training hours are specified by the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). After you pass the exam you can apply for the license. The fee for the license is $60. Additional fees for the examination may also apply.

Minimum required training hours

  • Cosmetologist/Barber license: 2000 hours
  • Esthetician license: 600 hours
  • Nail Technician: 300 hours

Examinations are already stressful but a lack of information or misinformation only adds unnecessary stress. The exams are administered by NIC. Therefore, we advise every applicant to read through the Candidate Bulletins on the DOPL Homepage or at NICtesting.org  and contact the Board or NIC if you have further questions.

Cosmetology License Renewal

Cosmetology licenses in Utah are renewed every two years at the same date. For this reason, it is very likely that the first licensing period is shorter, depending on the licensing date. At the moment no continuing education (CE) are required for individual license renewal. The renewal fees are $52 for most beauty practitioner disciplines.

Out-of-state license / Out-of-country license

Out of state

Utah accepts any state level examination administered and verified by any other State’s Licensing agency.

Out of Country

You need to verify your training hours through an approved credentialing company (see application on DOPL Homepage). Submit the application together with the appropriate fees to the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing.
