To receive a cosmetology license in New Jersey or a license in one of the other beauty practitioner disciplines in this state you have to attend a licensed school or a licensed vocational program and complete the minimum required training hours as specified by the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling before you can take the state’s board exams. PSI has been awarded the contract to administer the written licensing examinations on behalf of the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling beginning March 1, 2015. All candidates must be pre-approved to take an examination. Your education provider will electronically upload your eligibility to PSI upon successful completion of the course requirements. Each candidate will receive an email confirmation immediately after the eligibility has been received by PSI. Upon receipt of the email confirmation, please go to PSIExams.com or call 1-800-733-9267 to pay and schedule your examination.

Minimum required training hours

  • Cosmetologist-hairstylist: 1200 hours for license
  • Manicurist: 300 hours for license
  • Skin Care Specialist: 600 hours

Examinations are already stressful, but a lack of information or misinformation only adds unnecessary stress. Therefore, we advise every applicant to talk to their beauty school teachers to clear all questions ahead of time.

Cosmetology License Renewal

New Jersey cosmetology licenses in must be renewed every two years. The costs are $50 for the renewal if paid in time.  So far no continuing education is required to renew your cosmetology license. The BBC offers two renewal options: A) automated system using a paper form (takes 6 to 8 weeks) or B) online (takes 15 to 20 days).

 

Out-of-state license / Out-of- country license

Licenses obtained in another state or another country can be transferred by endorsement if they are current and the requirements to obtain these licenses meet the requirement for a cosmetology license in New Jersey.You must submit an “out-of-state” or an “out-of-country” application (Form: Licensure by Endorsement) and required documentation and pass the Board’s examination.
